Untitled
Recent work by Catherine Borg
Contemporary Arts Center
October 2- November 22, 2008
The use of titles for artistic creations can be useful in framing ones work or otherwise guiding an audience. But artists do not always provide an interpretation of their work, preferring to let viewers form their own ideas. Though the individual works in the exhibit are titled I am opting to leave this presentation of them together untitled, the accumulated meaning to each viewer alone.
Interested in the way architecture structures our days and memories and how the speed and mediation of urban life is mutating our perceptions I consider the difference between active observing and passive gazing in my recent work. The practice of photography has traditionally been a way to extract and highlight the details that get passed by in time or a way to experience the intricacies of a frozen moment. But in an increasingly visual culture where we are bombarded with detailed images and an art world that has embraced the huge highly detailed photographic print, the term “glazed over” comes to mind. Although I consider my practice photographic -- even when I make videos, installations or drawings active reduction rather than accumulation of symbols describes my approach. My intent is to offer evocative images and experiences with subtleties and subtexts.
Short Statements about a few of the video pieces that will be included in the exhibition:
ADVENTURE NON-FICTION: Tracking the Void, 2007
Video installation
Three channels of video perpendicular left to right
Digital video. Silent Running time 7 minutes, 18 seconds loop
ADVENTURE NON-FICTION: Tracking the Void is a silent video that samples places and moments in continuous tracking shots creating a space unto itself that is circular, hollow, without end. Each of the three channels (presented side by side when exhibited as a single channel work) is a sample of the Las Vegas landscape. From left to right: A forward and reverse rotation around the corner adjacent to the abandoned “Queen of Hearts” in downtown Las Vegas, future site of City Hall. Central is the Las Vegas Strip, circa 2004, an endless stream of visitors and architectures many since mutated or erased. And finally, the ghost of the darkened “Aztec” never a name it held formally but one fitting for this “locals casino,” “farmersmarket,” cast-off hiding an interior city of “homeless” and once owned by Michael Jackson.
I only have stars for you; you only hold stars for me., 2007
Digital video
Running time: 10 minutes, 34 seconds
I only have stars for you; you only hold stars for me. pairs video footage of the implosion of the Stardust Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas with personal and comparatively inept gestures. Cacophonous revelers at the implosion event who anxiously and irreverently await the extravaganza provide the primary “narration.” These elements combined present a complicated view of the spectacle, as horrific and sublime, that questions the role of the artist, both personally and generally, in proximity.
Experiment Phantom Area, 2006 collaboration with Amy Yoes
Digital video
Running time 28 minutes, 6 seconds
Experiment Phantom Area was initially shown one evening in Las Vegas at the Peppermill Lounge. The Peppermill fire-pit is itself refracted in one of the four distinct segments of sampled and simply manipulated imagery embodied in the work, which reflects both artists’ interest in the deceptive use of commercial interiors and in creating a portal into another interpretation of architectural space.
