Punch Line performance at 8 pm
"Shift" performance art by UNLV students presented in our window galleries

The piece Punch Line by Michael Barrett enacts different ways of documenting the forms of pressure, stress, and tension that occur while struggling to achieve a sense of balance and control in difficult and painful situations. In this work, the environment is depicted as a boxing ring, in which the performer (right handed) wages a fight with his alter ego (left handed boxing glove attached to a punching device). Each performance is based on the time frame of a heavy weight-boxing match, made up of twelve, three-minute rounds, with a one minute intermission in between each round. The goal of the performer is to control the balance of the platform while attempting to paint a straight line. Each time the performer attempts to paint a line, he is subjected to the pain of being punched in the face. Both the performer and his alter ego produce woks, which evidence the struggle of balance and control.

Shift by a group of UNLV students is a site-determined installation and time-based sculpture created by a group of students from UNLV "Art in Public Places" and funded by the City of Las Vegas Arts Commission. ‘Art in Public Places” concentrates on roles, responsibilities and collaborative experience between artists, designers, architects and communities on the conceptualization, development and realization of art objects for public applications.
